How Should We Worship?
John 4:5-26 by John Willoughby
This morning I’m going to use a familiar Bible story from the Gospel of John Chapter four to explain to you how God wants us to worship Him.

What are the two requirements for God pleasing worship?

1st - Jesus says our worship must be spiritual.

What does it mean to worship in spirit?

  • It means you must worship according to God’s Spirit.

God doesn’t want a bunch of religious words and actions. Religion is man’s attempt to make himself look good in God’s eyes. God doesn’t desire man-made worship. He desires spiritual worship!

What do you have to do to worship God in spirit?

  • You have to be born again by the Holy Spirit.
  • You have to allow the Spirit of God to guide your life.

2nd - Jesus says our worship must be truthful.

What does it mean to worship in truth?

  • It means you must worship according to God’s Word.

God doesn’t want us to worship according to our selfish desires, flaky feelings, or our denominational upbringing. He wants our worship to be tested by the Bible. It is our worship guide. II Timothy 3:16-17

The Point

Can we worship God anyway we want to, or does God expect us to worship Him in a specific fashion? Jesus answered that question in John chapter four when He told a woman at a well, “God desires to be worshipped in spirit and in truth.”
