Belief
Luke 9:1-17 by John Willoughby
Last week we looked in the Sermon on the Mount to learn what prayer is and what it isn’t. According to Jesus, prayer is a personal conversation between you and God. It is not some religious performance played out in front of others to make your self look spiritual. Prayer is not a show for others, but it is sharing your needs and desires with your Heavenly Father.
When dinner time came around, the disciples went to Jesus and said, “Jesus, it’s getting late. Why don’t you stop teaching for today and let everyone go home to eat?” But instead of sending the people away, Jesus looked at his disciples and said, “You feed them.”
What did the disciples do when Jesus told them to feed the people?
- The disciples gave Jesus excuses. Luke 9:10-13
Why didn’t the disciples think they could feed the people?
- The disciples thought the problem too big for God.
How did Jesus teach His disciples that nothing is impossible with God?
- First, Jesus told His disciples to look for food within the crowd.
- Next, Jesus told His disciples to put the people into groups.
- Then Jesus blessed the fish and loaves, had His disciples distribute the food to the people.
- Jesus told His disciples to collect the leftovers.
What do you have to do to see God’s power?
- You must pray that believing God can and will do what you ask Him to do. Matthew 7:7-8; 21:22
“Until we see that prayer is stupid, that is, stupid from the ordinary, natural, common sense point of view, we will never pray. It is absurd to think that God is going to alter things in answer to prayer. But that is what Jesus says He will do. It sounds stupid, but it is stupidity based on His redemption. The reason that our prayers are not answered is that we are not stupid enough to believe what Jesus says.”
Oswald Chambers
The Point
Who gets to see God’s power? People stupid enough to go to God in prayer, believing that He can and will do whatever they ask Him to do.
