Summer In The Psalms

The Book of Psalms was written by several people who lived during the time of Moses to Israel’s Babylonian captivity (about 1,000 years). Psalms is the largest and most diverse book in the Bible. It is comprised of 150 prayers, hymns, confessions, creation songs, and stories about Israel’s history laid out in five mini-books. Everything in Psalms is focused on worship. Whether a writer is looking back at history, looking around at his enemies and problems, or looking up into the heavens, he assures us God is great and good, and worthy of our worship. The Psalms show us that God should be praised because of who He is, what He has done, what He is doing, and what He has promised to do.

Many people talk about God, but the Psalms remind us that we can speak directly to God. We ask God for clarity, comfort, and strength. “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.” (Psalm 23:1-3, NLT)

As we study the Psalms this summer, you will see your Creator and His desire to hear from you and meet your needs. Then you will shout, “Great is the Lord! He is worthy of praise!
